I enjoy a five-star meal just as much as anyone else, but I also love to fill up with good old-fashioned comfort food. Who said baked beans and hot dogs can’t be both anyway? No. One. Ever. So pour the wine and get out the good paper plates, because I’ve got a foolproof beanie weenies recipe that’s fit for the camp queen.

Baked Beans and Hot Dogs

Meal planning for camping trips shouldn’t be a hassle. If I have to put in a lot of extra effort for basic tasks like getting dinner on the table, the appeal of camping would wear off quickly for me.

I travel in a teardrop camper, complete with a 2 burner propane gas stove. And no oven. 😧

At first, I wondered how I was going to prepare our go-to meals without our go-to kitchen appliances. I mean, our very favorite franks and beans recipe might start off on a stovetop but it finishes in the oven to bake the mandatory cornbread topping. This is what makes the dish, so leaving it off was not an option.

Luckily, the Omnia oven is made for a gas stovetop. I’ll say that again because this revelation was a game-changer for me. Anything that requires baking can be done on any gas stove. In this case, I did a trial run on a portable camp stove right in our driveway.

If you’ve never heard of the Omnia oven, you might want to check out my post, #1 Camp Baking Method for Campers Without a Campfire for the particulars on how this must-have appliance works.

Step 1:

Slice and brown a package of your favorite hot dogs. I use an all-beef brand, such as Hebrew National.

Step 2:

Add your favorite can of baked beans. I like Bush’s Baked Beans.

Step 3:

Mix cornbread according to the package directions. I used Marie Callender’s brand and only had to add water – much easier for camping.

Step 4:

Pour cornbread mix over the beans and hot dogs. Since I was not using a traditional oven to bake mine, I had to first transfer the mixture into the Omnia stovetop oven. As a bonus, I found some foil liners specifically made for the Omnia oven, making clean-up a breeze.

Step 5:

Bake according to the cornbread package directions. Since I used an Omnia oven instead of a conventional oven, I had a few extra Omnia steps.

Omnia Oven

The Omnia pan sits inside a stainless-steel base, which needs to be pre-heated on a high gas flame for 3 minutes. It is this stainless-steel base, used with the lid, that makes the “oven”.

Once the oven is preheated, turn the flame down to low. There is no way to regulate the temperature to precise degrees with the Omnia oven, so start with the recommended cooking time and keep checking until done.

The cornbread directions were to bake at 375 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Mine took 45 minutes before the cornbread was cooked through:
